When she found herself craving a new challenge, Michelle “Brownie” Pugh set her eyes on the John Muir Trail—a hiking trail traversing 211 miles from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney in California. Heralded by Backpacker Magazine as the best long-distance trail in the country, the John Muir Trail boasts scenic and demanding mileage through the High Sierras. In Lost and Found Pugh details her experiences from planning and training to the trail itself. The serene beauty of high mountain passes and alpine lakes is mixed with hilarious tales of river crossings, hail storms, altitude sickness, and hiking companions. You’re guaranteed to laugh out loud, and possibly head out to purchase your own pair of hiking boots.

Book Lost and Found: A John Muir Trail Thru-Hike Review :

I’ve been a fan of Brownie’s ever since I read her account of the AT awhile back. I had the pleasure of running into her on the John Muir Trail and looked forward to her account. She accurately represented some of the challenges that year, which including a number of smoky days from a fire in Yosemite, as well as several rainy days in a row. She had some challenges along the way and showed her usual perseverance and fortitude as she and her friend, Sarah, figured out some of the nuances of the trail that were different from what they were used to on the East Coast. I chuckled when they had trouble finding the precise, official start of the trail because I’ve had the same experience so many times in the Sierra. Signage is “pretty good” on the JMT but every junction is not signed and sometimes it’s confusing. It took a while to actually get on the trail as Brownie had quite a few challenges to overcome before she even got there. People who intend to hike the JMT will appreciate learning about how she trained and the equipment she got as she upgraded from her AT kit. I enjoyed Brownie’s descriptions of the trail, and especially the friends they made along the way. Trail families become such an important part of a long-trail experience and her interactions enriched the narrative. I was impressed that she and Sarah found ways to support each other and minor friction was dealt with. It's not always easy to spend that much time with a friend. This is an enjoyable account of one woman's perspective hiking the JMT.
I enjoyed reading the book as found a lot similarities with the author. This was the reason I decided to download the book after reading the sample. One thing I didn’t like was complaining about signs (lack of) on JMT. I have hiked several section of the trail and never had any issue with signs. I have read few other JMT books and have read hiker blogs and never heard anyone else complain about the signs. Especially at the beginning at Happy Isles, there is huge sign which is hard to miss and it has been there for a long time. I am not sure how they both missed it. Hence, I gave it four stars instead of five.
